Skin – Brain communication
The skin and the brain have the same biological origin. It is our first tool for knowledge and exploration of the world. Its specific sensorial captors receive and carry information through a network of fibers. All these signals go back along the sensory nerves to the spinal cord and then to the brain.
There is a dual transmission circuit: one fast and the other slower. The first is activated by A-beta nerve fibers, specialized in the detection and identification of external factors. The signals are transmitted at the speed of a Hi-Speed Train (20 to 80 meters per second). At the same time another circuit, from other sensors, activates the C fibers, which transmit the information more slowly (0.5 to 2 meters per second). Some are specialized in pain, others in itching or in pleasure. The “fast system” tells us that we are affected and the “slow system” adds the associated emotion.
The impact of ageing
As we age, the number of receptors decreases. At the same time, the nerve fibers that are connected to these receptors weaken, slowing down the transmission of information. In the skin, communication between the nerve fibers and the skin cells is therefore less good.
As a result, the mechanical properties of the skin are affected, the skin slackens and loses its elasticity.
When we touch an objet with fingers, the skin goes into vibration; it is these vibrations which will then excite the receptors. For older skins, vibrations are much more absorbed than for young skin. This added to the weakening of the nerve fibers, impacts the communication fibers to fibroblasts and then the synthesis of collagen and elastin.
As a result, the pigment spots multiply.
Spots result from a group of melanocytes producing excess of pigments in response to repeated UVS stress on the skin. The appearance of brown spots is linked to a heterogeneous innervation of the epidermis due to the accumulation of UVS stress and to an exacerbated communication between nerve fibers and melanocytes. Thanks to their dendrites, the nerve fibers communicate with the melanocytes, releasing messengers called neuropeptides. When the latter bind to the receptors on the surface of the melanocytes, they activate the synthesis and / or export of melanin to the keratinocytes.
